The original Xteink X4 is discontinued. Buy the Xteink X3 for $69 if you want a button-only pocket reader today. Check Xteink X4 Pro stock at $99 if a built-in front light matters. Do not wait for the Xteink S4 unless Kindle, Kobo, or Libby access is non-negotiable and you are willing to import from China.

Update, August 24, 2026

The original X4 is sold out and the product page is gone

Xteink told The eBook Reader that the original X4 is “officially sold out, and there are no plans for future production.” As of August 24, the original X4 product page returns a 404. The practical replacement choice is the X3 or X4 Pro, not a restock alert.

Is the Xteink X4 discontinued?

Yes. The original Xteink X4 ended on August 12, 2026: reporting on Xteink’s announcement says the model is sold out with no future production planned, and the official product page no longer exists. Good e-Reader’s follow-up says Xteink directed shoppers to the X3 or X4 Pro and asked buyers to stay tuned for a new X4 series.

That last line is a teaser, not a release date. You cannot order a new original X4 from Xteink, so a marketplace or used listing is a separate decision with its own firmware-lock and condition risk. Start with the X4 pre-purchase reality check and the locked or unlocked buying guide before treating a leftover X4 as a bargain.

What should you buy instead of the Xteink X4?

Buy the Xteink X3 if you want the simple, button-only pocket-reader job the original X4 did. Buy the Xteink X4 Pro if you need to read without a lamp. The X3 is $69 and listed available in both colors; the X4 Pro is $99 and listed available in Space Black as of August 24, 2026. The full X4 Pro, S4, and X4 comparison has the longer decision tree.

The live Xteink choice

X3 $69

Button-only, 3.7-inch, and no front light. The X3 is the clear pick for daylight reading, physical controls, and the lowest-priced new Xteink.

X4 Pro $99

4.3-inch, touch plus physical buttons, and a warm/cool front light. The X4 Pro is the only shipping Xteink for reading in the dark.

Steps:

  1. Pick the X3 if you read in ambient light. The Xteink X3 is the $69 option when simple buttons matter more than a larger panel or a front light.
  2. Pick the X4 Pro if you read at night. The Xteink X4 Pro’s front light is the reason to pay $99 and accept pogo-pin charging.
  3. Pause only for S4 app support. Wait for the Xteink S4 only if importing from China is acceptable and sideloaded Android reading apps are worth the wait.

Xteink X3 vs X4 Pro: which replacement is which?

The Xteink X3 is the simple replacement for the discontinued X4. The Xteink X4 Pro is the front-lit replacement. Neither one restores the original X4’s USB-C port, so buyers who specifically need USB-C should consider a used X4 rather than assume the Pro is a straight hardware upgrade.

The X3 charges through a magnetic pogo-pin cable rather than USB-C. The X4 Pro also uses pogo pins, with an included magnetic charging adapter but no charging cable. The original X4 had USB-C, was button-only, and had no front light. For the size and carry tradeoffs, use the X3 vs X4 model-choice guide, not a duplicate table here.

Daylight reader

Buy the X3

The Xteink X3 keeps the button-first, no-light formula at $69. Read what to know before buying the X3 if the smaller screen appeals to you.

Check X4 Pro stock

The Xteink X4 Pro adds an adjustable warm/cool front light, which is the capability the original X4 and X3 lack. Read the X4 Pro reality check for the tradeoffs.

Existing X4 owner

Do not replace it by default

An original X4 with USB-C and the bottom button row can still be the better fit. Use upgrade, stick, or skip? before buying a Pro.

Keep or upgrade

Firmware-first buyer

X3 is the calmer choice

CrossPoint 1.6.0rc adds X4 Pro support, while 1.5.0 remains the stable release. The Pro path is still a pre-release. See the firmware hub before you choose.

Firmware matters

Should you wait for the Xteink S4?

No, unless Android app support is the whole point and you are prepared to import from China. Joshua Lowcock’s S4 tracker reports that Xteink has no current international-release plan. That makes the S4 an import project, not the default replacement for a discontinued X4.

The Xteink S4 is relevant if your books live in Kindle, Kobo, or Libby and you will not maintain a DRM-free EPUB library. Everyone else gets a reader sooner by buying the X3 or X4 Pro. The S4 guide keeps the reported details and release uncertainty in one place.

Should you wait for an X4 Gen 2 or new X4 series?

No. A leaked X4 Gen 2 or “X4 Classic” slide exists, but it is not a buyable Xteink SKU and does not give you a date to plan around. Xteink’s own discontinuation message hints at an upcoming X4 series, but a hint is not an order page, a price, or a shipping promise.

If you want a reader this month, buy the X3 or check X4 Pro stock. If you enjoy watching the rumor trail, the X4 Gen 2 and X4 Pro tracker separates confirmed X4 Pro details from reported and leaked material.

Should you buy a used original X4?

Buy a used original X4 only when USB-C and the bottom button row are requirements, not preferences. The original X4 has no front light, and a used unit adds unknown screen condition, returns, and firmware status. Do not pay a premium merely because the original X4 vanished from the official store.

If you take that route, keep the return window open and run the arrival checks in the locked-unit guide. For most buyers, the official X3 is the cleaner $69 answer. For a larger, front-lit reader, the X4 Pro is the cleaner $99 answer.

Where should you go from here?

The original X4’s discontinuation does not make every Xteink a good fit. If you want a pocket reader for DRM-free books, start with the compact e-reader guide. If you already chose an X3 or X4 Pro, use the firmware hub and accessories guide after the purchase, not before you know which charging setup you are buying.

The short version

Buy a reader, not a rumor

The Xteink X3 is the $69 answer for buttons and daylight. The Xteink X4 Pro is the $99 answer for a front light. The original X4 is a used-market exception, and the Xteink S4 is an import-only wait.

FAQ

Is the Xteink X4 discontinued?

Yes. Xteink said the original X4 is sold out with no future production planned, and the original X4 product page returned 404 on August 24, 2026.

What is the best Xteink X4 alternative?

Buy the Xteink X3 at $69 for a button-only pocket reader. Buy the Xteink X4 Pro at $99 if you need a built-in front light.

Should I wait for the Xteink S4?

Only if Kindle, Kobo, or Libby access is non-negotiable and you will import from China. No international S4 release is currently reported.

Does CrossPoint run on the X4 Pro?

Yes. CrossPoint 1.6.0rc adds X4 Pro support. The current stable release remains CrossPoint 1.5.0, so X4 Pro support is still pre-release.

Does the X4 Pro replace the USB-C X4?

No. The X4 Pro adds a front light and touch controls, but it charges through pogo pins instead of USB-C. A used original X4 is the only route if USB-C is the requirement.
