Kindle

Modern Kindles have no built-in image picker, so most owners first turn off the lock-screen ads (Amazon’s “Special Offers”), then use a workaround or a jailbreak to point the sleep screen at their own image. Whichever route you take, the image has to be the exact panel size and dithered — that’s what this tool produces.

Kobo

Kobo can show a custom image while asleep. Turn the option on in the power / energy-saving settings, then drop your PNG into the sleep-screen folder Kobo reads (varies by model — the on-device setting names the location).

Boox

Boox (Onyx) has a built-in screensaver setting: open the system settings, find the screensaver / standby-screen option, and point it at your image or its folder. A grayscale PNG installs cleanly even on the colour Kaleido models.

reMarkable

reMarkable uses a suspend / sleep screen you can replace with your own image via the built-in setting (or a community tool, depending on your software version). Export at the tablet’s exact resolution here first so it isn’t stretched.

How do I make a custom screensaver for my Kindle?
Drop a photo into the maker above, pick your Kindle model so it’s the exact panel size (e.g. Paperwhite 2024 is 1264×1680), and download the dithered PNG. Then set it on the device: Kindle has no built-in picker, so most owners turn off the lock-screen ads first and use a workaround or jailbreak to swap the sleep image. What size should a Kindle screensaver be?
It depends on the model’s panel: Paperwhite (2024) and Colorsoft — 1264×1680, Paperwhite (2021) — 1236×1648, basic Kindle (2022/2024) — 1072×1448, Scribe — 1860×2480. Pick your model in the tool and it resizes to the exact panel for you, so you don’t have to match it by hand.

Why do my screensavers look grainy or banded on the e-ink screen?
An ordinary photo has far more shades than an e-ink panel can show, so it collapses into flat blocks or visible banding unless it’s dithered first. This tool dithers every image (Floyd–Steinberg or Atkinson) so the tones become a fine pattern of dots the panel can render — the preview is what you’ll see on the device. It’s automatic; nothing to set.

Does dithering matter on a 16-level Kindle or a colour Kaleido reader?
It helps on both. This tool dithers to 4 grey levels — a Kindle’s 16-level panel shows a slightly finer version of the same clean image, so it never looks worse, and it fixes the banding you’d get from an undithered photo. On colour Kaleido / Gallery panels (Kindle Colorsoft, Boox colour models) a grayscale sleep screen installs fine; the dither just won’t reproduce identically to a mono panel.

What kind of image makes the best e-ink screensaver?
High-contrast, simple images look best. Works great: a bold single subject that stands clear of its background, near-black-and-white photos, silhouettes, line art and logos, and simple layouts with lots of empty space. Tends to struggle: smooth gradients and open skies (they band into stripes), busy scenes full of similar mid-greys, and anything relying on fine detail or small text. Not sure?
