Kindle

Kindle has no built-in image picker. Turn off lock-screen ads (Amazon's "Special Offers"), then use a workaround or a jailbreak to point the sleep screen at your PNG. The image has to be the exact panel size and dithered. The maker above already exports that file.

Kobo

Kobo can show a custom image while asleep. Turn the option on in power or energy-saving settings, then drop your PNG into the sleep-screen folder Kobo reads. The on-device setting names the folder. It varies by model.

Boox

Boox has a built-in screensaver setting. Open system settings, find screensaver or standby screen, and point it at your image or its folder. A grayscale PNG installs on colour Kaleido models too.

reMarkable

reMarkable uses a suspend screen you can replace in settings, or with a community tool on some software versions. Export at the tablet's exact resolution first so it isn't stretched.

How do I make a custom screensaver for my Kindle?
Drop a photo into the maker above, pick your Kindle so the export matches the panel (Paperwhite 2024 is 1264×1680), and download the dithered PNG. Kindle has no built-in picker. Most owners turn off lock-screen ads first, then use a workaround or jailbreak to swap the sleep image. Wrong size and no dither are what make it band.

Can I use this for a Kobo, Boox or reMarkable too?
Yes. Pick your reader from the device menu. Ready sizes cover popular Kobo (Clara, Libra, Sage, Elipsa), Boox (Page, Palma, Note Air), reMarkable, PocketBook and Nook models. Or type any width×height. Export is a dithered PNG at that size. Drop it in the reader's screensaver or sleep-screen folder.

What size should a Kindle screensaver be?
It depends on the panel. Paperwhite (2024) and Colorsoft are 1264×1680. Paperwhite (2021) is 1236×1648. Basic Kindle (2022/2024) is 1072×1448. Scribe is 1860×2480. Pick your model in the tool and it resizes to that panel.

Why do my screensavers look grainy or banded on the e-ink screen?
An ordinary photo has more shades than an e-ink panel can show, so it collapses into flat blocks or banding unless you dither it first. This tool dithers every image (Floyd–Steinberg or Atkinson). Tones become a fine dot pattern the panel can render. The preview is what you will see on the device. Automatic. Nothing to set.

Does dithering matter on a 16-level Kindle or a colour Kaleido reader?
It helps on both. This tool dithers to 4 grey levels. A Kindle's 16-level panel shows a slightly finer version of the same clean image, so it never looks worse, and it still kills the banding from an undithered photo. On colour Kaleido or Gallery panels (Kindle Colorsoft, Boox colour models) a grayscale sleep screen installs fine. The dither will not match a mono panel one-for-one.

What kind of image makes the best e-ink screensaver?
High-contrast, simple images look best. Works: a bold subject off a clean background, near-black-and-white photos, silhouettes, line art, logos, and empty space. Struggles: smooth gradients and open skies (they stripe), busy mid-grey scenes, and fine detail or small text. Not sure? Start from a ready-made wallpaper in the maker above.
