Late July 2026 is the reported US launch window, and it’s now sharpening into a specific week. Joshua Lowcock, whose tracker has followed this device longer than anyone, published a hands-on first review of the X4 Pro that names a concrete embargo date: his review copy came with an agreement not to post photos or video until the review embargo ends on July 21, 2026. That lines up with eReadersForum’s earlier July 1 first look, which described the device as “launching this July.”

Two developments this week make “late July” feel more concrete:

• Xteink’s own Instagram broke its own embargo. On July 15, 2026, Xteink’s official Instagram account posted X4 Pro photos days ahead of the July 21 cutoff. The open question is no longer does it exist; it’s when can you order one.

The paper trail that got us here still matters, because it’s what ties the names together:

• An FCC model number. Both trackers report the regulatory model 2BTR9-X4PRO. The single biggest source of confusion is that “X4 V2 Pro,” “X4 Pro,” and “X4P” are all the same device: three names for one product (the FCC model 2BTR9-X4PRO ties them together). What it is not is the S4, and it is not the base X4 either. Both trackers are explicit on this, and it matters because the three run different software on different hardware.

A fourth name entered the picture on July 16: the X4 Gen 2, a lighter refresh of the base X4 (no light, no touch) that so far exists only in leaked AliExpress seller slides. It is neither the Pro nor the S4.

So the V2 Pro is best understood as “the X4 with a front light and touch, still running Xteink’s own OS”, not the Android pivot the S4 represents. Where Lowcock and eReadersForum line up, the story is consistent, and it’s the story X4 owners have wanted:

• An adjustable front light with warm and cool tones. This is the headline. A front light is the single most-requested X4 feature, because the base X4 has none at all. Both sources report the V2 Pro adds one, with color-temperature control.
• A touchscreen that trims, rather than keeps, the X4’s buttons. Lowcock’s hands-on and the official Instagram photos both settle this: the Pro drops the X4’s bottom/front buttons entirely (that’s why the body is slightly shorter), but it isn’t pure-touch either. Two page-turn buttons move to the sides: one left (back), one right (forward), plus a home button discreetly hidden front-middle. So you get tap-and-swipe navigation with three physical buttons still on hand, not the X4’s full button set plus touch layered on top.
• The same OS family. The Pro runs “XTOS,” Xteink’s own non-Android operating system, the same platform lineage as the X4 and X3: not Android, and not a Linux distro (more on that below).

What the early reviews actually say

Lowcock’s review asks its question in the title: is the X4 Pro a worthy upgrade? His full-text answer, now that the review is readable in full, is more specific, and more cautious, than the headline suggests:

• The touchscreen is a visibly cheaper part. Lowcock writes that Xteink “have definitely gone for a cheaper touch screen. You can see the touch screen layer from certain angles. It’s like small microdots on the screen.” Response is laggy, and navigation is mostly touch-driven now that the bottom buttons are gone. His verdict is blunt: “I would not buy the XTEINK X4 Pro yet until they fix the touch lag.”
• The front light works, but his unit had a battery scare. Brightness and color temperature are both adjustable, and the light can be turned off entirely, which Lowcock did after “some wildly fast battery draining issues” that he suspects are “(another) software bug,” describing battery life that “drained in minutes.” He also noted “some light leakage around the bottom of the X4 Pro, not a lot, but noticeable.”
• What’s in the box: the X4 Pro itself, a 32 GB microSD card, and a USB-C-to-pogo cable. The microSD slot has moved to the top of the device. MagSafe is built in and works. His unit, a Chinese-market model, shipped with no case yet.

Seller marketing slides, July 16: treat every number as unofficial

The day after Xteink’s Instagram slip, the spec sheet itself leaked. An AliExpress seller posted what looks like Xteink’s own product-line marketing slides, and an r/XTEINK member surfaced them: “Xteink X4 gen 2 and X4 Pro leak from Aliexpress” (July 16, 2026; 295 upvotes and 154 comments within a day). The slides, styled as an “XTEINK Product Line Overview,” show three devices side by side: the X3, the X4 Pro, and a device with no prior paper trail at all, an X4 Gen 2.

For the X4 Pro, the leak carries the first claimed hard numbers we’ve seen anywhere:

• 4.3-inch e-paper display, the same size class as the base X4.
• 1100 mAh battery, the first battery figure attached to the Pro by any source.
• Front light and touch support, matching all prior reporting, plus “supports comics and mixed layouts.”
• The mock screen on the render lists Cloud Sync, notable because cloud sync had previously appeared only in eReadersForum’s single-source report.

The surprise is the X4 Gen 2, a refresh of the base X4 rather than a version of the Pro. Its slide describes a 4.3-inch display, an approx. 68 g body (“lighter and thinner”), a 920 mAh battery good for “about 1 week of casual reading,” comics and mixed-layout support, cloud sync, and, unexpectedly, magnetic attachment pitched as a “strong magnetic fit on the back of your phone,” the phone-companion framing Xteink has so far reserved for the X3. No front light and no touchscreen appear anywhere on the Gen 2 slide, which is exactly why some button loyalists in the thread landed on it: one commenter’s summary was simply “X4 gen 2 sounds like a winner.” (A stray detail for the naming file: the reading-surface mock on the Gen 2 render signs off with “X4 Classic,” which may hint at what the current X4 gets called once a Gen 2 exists.)

The thread’s poster adds two rumors worth logging with the same caveat: that the Pro does not run Android and can turn its touch layer off, and rumored pricing of $69–79 for the X4 (Gen 2) and $99 for the X4 Pro, which lands on top of the ~$97–99 the two trackers already report. The slides themselves carry no prices. What the thread’s 150-plus comments mostly argue about is the same trade the hands-on review flagged: front-light fans calling the light their #1 feature after e-ink, and simplicity fans replying that “the simplicity of the device is its biggest selling point” and that touch layers cost contrast. Whether the Gen 2 keeps the base X4’s plain USB-C port or follows the Pro to pogo pins is asked repeatedly in the thread and answered nowhere.

Two grains of salt before any of this goes in a spreadsheet. First, the source is a grey-market AliExpress seller: precisely the crowd Lowcock warns is “speculating” on stock it doesn’t have, so a leaked slide deck is not a product page, and the don’t-pre-order advice below applies to the seller hosting this leak too. Second, nothing here is corroborated by Xteink, a regulatory filing, or a hands-on: the Pro numbers at least match the reported feature set, but the X4 Gen 2 currently exists only in these slides.

The Trade-offs (and the USB Question)

Where the sourcing got thin, and where it's firming up

When we first covered this device, the two trackers directly contradicted each other on wired connectivity: Lowcock’s tracker described the Pro as adding USB read/write over a cable, while eReadersForum reported that Xteink removed the USB-C port in favor of a magnetic pin connector with a USB-C-to-magnetic dongle for wired transfer.

That’s now resolved in eReadersForum’s favor. Lowcock’s own unit has no USB-C port: the box ships a USB-C-to-pogo cable instead, confirming the physical port is gone in favor of the magnetic pogo connector. If you’re planning cables and cases, plan around needing that adapter cable rather than a standard USB-C cord. It’s also a live complaint in the community: the July 16 launch-timing thread has owners saying dependence on the pogo adapter is a dealbreaker compared to the base X4’s plain USB-C.

Single-source features (eReadersForum only; hedge accordingly). The following come from eReadersForum’s first-look alone, with no second source to corroborate them yet:

• A font-generation tool, cloud sync, a small in-house book store, and drag-and-drop import for your own files.

Take each as one outlet’s reporting, not confirmed fact. One of the four has since picked up a second, weaker sighting: the leaked AliExpress seller slides list “Cloud Sync” on both the X4 Pro and the X4 Gen 2. A leaked slide corroborates; it doesn’t confirm. One earlier single-source claim didn’t hold up: eReadersForum’s report of “16 GB of fixed storage” is contradicted by Lowcock’s unboxing, which found a 32 GB microSD card in the box with the card slot moved to the top of the device: expandable storage, not fixed flash.

Firmware-support uncertainty, now with a concrete answer. Because the Pro stays in the XTOS family rather than moving to Android, there’s an open question the CrossPoint crowd cares about: will the open-source firmware scene support it? Lowcock’s review addresses this directly: CrossPoint does not run on the Pro yet, and he isn’t attempting to sideload it himself, citing “too many hardware changes”: the touchscreen, front light, and a real-time clock the X3/X4 don’t have. Developers, he notes, need both time and access to the device before that can change. He also points to what he calls “the official partnership between XTEINK and Crosspoint,” and hopes for an update from that pairing. So the answer is no longer “nobody knows”; it’s “not yet, and it depends on the CrossPoint team getting hardware in hand.”

There is still no official price. What’s changed: Lowcock’s hands-on review reports US pricing around $97, landing right next to eReadersForum’s earlier estimate of around $99. Two independent sources within a couple of dollars of each other makes ~$97–99 the number to plan around. A third, weaker data point landed July 16: the poster of the AliExpress spec leak relays a $99 rumor for the Pro (and $69–79 for the leaked X4 Gen 2), squarely inside the same range:

That puts the Pro about $30 above the base X4, and above the ~$70-ish international S4 estimate too. That’s notable, given the S4 packs full Android and the Pro keeps Xteink’s lighter-weight OS. The premium buys the front light, the touchscreen, and the “stays on XTOS” software promise rather than raw horsepower. Until it’s on a storefront, though, it’s reporting, not a price tag.

What We Still Don’t Know

And one rumor to kill outright

Plenty about this device is genuinely undisclosed, and it’s worth being honest about the gaps:

• The chipset is not disclosed. Neither source names the processor. What we can say is what it runs: XTOS, a non-Android Xteink OS in the same family as the X4/X3.
• No screen size, resolution, battery, weight, or RAM has been officially published for the Pro specifically. The leaked seller slides claim a 4.3-inch display and an 1100 mAh battery, the first numbers attached to the Pro by any source, but a grey-market marketing slide is a claim, not a spec sheet from Xteink. People sometimes borrow the base X4’s numbers here too; don’t. They’re a different device’s specs.
• No official FCC grant confirmation, price, or date: only an application, two matching press figures (~$97–99), and a reported late-July window, respectively.

Kill this rumor: you may see the X4 V2 Pro described as running a Linux-based OS on an Allwinner F1C100s/F1C200s chip. There is no source for that, and it’s contradicted by both trackers, which describe a non-Android XTOS device with an undisclosed chip. If you’re deciding based on “it runs Linux/Allwinner,” you’re deciding on a fabricated spec. Until Xteink or a teardown says otherwise, the chip is simply “not disclosed.”

Should You Wait, or Buy an X4 or X3 Now?

The honest call for July 2026

This calculus genuinely changed in July. The wait is no longer open-ended: with the review embargo lifting July 21 and the community expecting launch “this coming week,” the X4 Pro is days away, not weeks. But Lowcock’s hands-on impressions cut the other way: he says outright he’d hold off, citing sluggish touch and a first-batch battery bug, which argues for letting launch reviews land before you pay.
