What Surprises New Xteink X3 Owners?
Five things surprise new Xteink X3 owners, and none is a defect. They are design choices that catch people arriving from a Kindle: proprietary charging, no light or touch, basic stock software, a flaky bundled microSD card, and a delicate screen.
1. It doesn’t charge over USB-C. The X3 charges through a proprietary magnetic pogo-pin cable. One reviewer who has been moving everything to USB-C calls it “one more thing to try and remember to bring with me” and notes “quite a lot of pushback on the Xteink subreddit about the connector”. 2. No light, no touch. Buttons only, ambient light only. An owner in the r/ereader thread lists “no backlight so poor in bed” among the X3’s few real negatives. If nighttime reading is your main use, stop here.
3. Stock software is basic and narrow. The stock reader handles sideloaded EPUB and TXT content only, and Wi-Fi is limited to 2.4 GHz, with reported compatibility issues on some home networks. It can’t join 5 GHz-only networks; most routers still broadcast 2.4 GHz. One owner notes a few seconds of rendering at chapter starts. Nearly every glowing X3 review you’ve seen was describing community firmware, not stock.
4. The bundled microSD card causes most “it’s broken” posts. A new owner spent hours failing to transfer EPUBs by every method until a commenter read the error messages: “Sounds like a bad card. Many people have said the stock cards aren’t very good quality.” An old Samsung card “worked instantly.” Have a known-good SanDisk or Samsung microSD ready before you troubleshoot anything else. The Xteink X3 is a burst reader, not a session reader. Its 3.7-inch screen is built for the reading you always have on you, not the reading you settle into for an hour.
One X3-owning reviewer who also has the X4 puts it plainly:
“5 to 10 minute reading bursts on the subway” (David Pavlicek, who owns both the X3 and X4, on where the X3 fits)
The tiny display forces tiny fonts or constant page flipping, and even reviewers who keep an X3 point long-session readers at a bigger screen.
Owners who bought the X3 for bursts tend to keep it. One reviewer who abandoned his Kindle: “I’ve had a Kindle for years but I stopped using it about 6 months ago… The X3 on the other hand is completely mine.” Kostek calls his X3 his “ultimate anti-scroll kit” after months of use.
Can the Xteink X3 Read Kindle or Libby Books?
No. The Xteink X3 reads only DRM-free EPUB and TXT files, so Kindle-store purchases and Libby or OverDrive loans will not open on it. There is no Kindle store, no library-loan app, and no bookstore on the device. You bring your own books.

Most owners manage the library in Calibre; an r/ereader commenter notes “Crosspoint has excellent integration with Calibre.” The caveat from that thread: “You need a source of books.” If you have DRM-free EPUBs, everything works. If you don’t, no firmware fixes that.
Do You Need to Flash Firmware on the Xteink X3?
You don’t strictly need to flash the Xteink X3, but most owners do. The device reviewers rave about is running community firmware, not stock. Treat a five-minute browser flash as part of the purchase.
Stock is serviceable. The firmware people mean when they praise the X3 is CrossPoint, which replaces the stock reader with better fonts, reading stats, and Calibre integration. The only confirmed way to "brick" an X3 is flashing the wrong file
A July owner flashed a .bin from a random CrossPoint pull request without checking what it was and got a blank, seemingly dead screen: “bricked,” in forum terms. The thread’s diagnosis: X4 firmware on an X3 kills the display output because the screen drivers differ, but “90% sure you didn’t brick your x3”. As long as the device still shows up over USB, a full-system restore through the web flasher’s debug tools recovers it. Flash only release builds for your exact model.
