Do you need a built-in front light?

The X4 Pro is the only shipping Xteink with a front light. The X3 and X4 Classic have none. A clip-on light still works on those if you already own one.

How the chooser decides

First match wins. 4 questions, 6 rules, 4 outcomes. The S4 is last on purpose.

  1. 1 Apps first. Kindle, Kobo, or Libby as apps is the S4, China-only. We do not pretend it ships internationally.
  2. 2 Front light is the Pro. It is the only shipping Xteink with one. CrossPoint 1.6.0rc is the Pro image, a pre-release tag that matches this hardware.
  3. 3 Flash plus a 4.3-inch page is still the Pro. The Classic has no CrossPoint build. A 4.3-inch unit you can flash is the Pro with 1.6.0rc.
  4. 4 Flash or unsure never lands on Classic. The X3 is the custom-firmware default. Unsure is treated like yes.
  5. 5 Smallest is the X3. Stock 4.3-inch is Classic. The discontinued original X4 is never a buy.

The X3 is the smallest shipping Xteink and the custom-firmware default. CrossPoint and the other forks run on it. The original USB-C X4 is discontinued, and the X4 Classic has no CrossPoint build yet.

The X4 Pro is the only shipping Xteink with a built-in front light. CrossPoint 1.6.0rc is the Pro image, a pre-release tag that matches this hardware. The original X4 is discontinued.

Xteink X4 Classic

$79, 4.3-inch, 68 g. The refined X4 page, on stock firmware only.

The X4 Classic (also called X4 V2) launched 6 September 2026. It is lighter and thinner than the discontinued original X4, with a 920 mAh battery and pogo-pin charging. No CrossPoint release covers it. Do not flash an X3, X4, or X4 Pro image onto it.

  • $79 on xteink.com (list $89). 68 g, 4.9 mm, 4.3-inch 219 PPI.
  • E-ink back screen and a toggleable shake-to-flip gesture, per Xteink.
  • No front light, no touch, pogo-pin charging (adapter in the box).
  • Stock firmware only. Watch CrossPoint releases for a Classic build.

Good to know

  • Do not run the OTA Unlocker or an X3/X4/X4 Pro CrossPoint build on the X4 Classic.
  • If you later want to flash, the X3 is the safe buy. The Classic is not an X4 you can unlock later.

Do not wait

Do not wait for the S4

Kindle, Kobo, and Libby as apps need the S4. It is China-only. Buy an X3 or X4 Pro this week if you want a unit now.

The S4 is Xteink's Android 11 model. Joshua Lowcock's tracker reported no international release planned as of August 2026. Importing from China is the only route, and "S4" listings on AliExpress have been fakes. If those apps are not worth an import, buy the X3 or the X4 Pro today.

  • Want a unit this week without Android apps? The X3 is $69.
  • Want a front light without Android? The X4 Pro is $99.
  • The original X4 is discontinued. Do not wait on it, and do not wait on rumored pocket readers that are not for sale.

Good to know

  • Any "S4" sold on AliExpress or Taobao as an international SKU has been a mislabeled X4 or a scam. Confirm the listing before you pay.
  • The X4 Pro is XTOS, not Android. Sideloading Kindle on the Pro is not a thing.

Which Xteink should I buy in 2026?
Buy the X3 if you want custom firmware or the smallest unit. Buy the X4 Classic if you want a 4.3-inch page on stock firmware. Buy the X4 Pro if you need a built-in front light. The S4 is China-only. The original X4 is discontinued. The four-question chooser on this page names one of those picks.
Does the Xteink X4 Classic run CrossPoint?
Not yet. As of September 8, 2026, no CrossPoint release covers the X4 Classic. Do not flash an X3, X4, or X4 Pro image onto it. Watch CrossPoint GitHub releases for a dedicated Classic build.
Should I wait for the Xteink S4?
Only if Kindle, Kobo, or Libby as apps is non-negotiable, and only if you will import from China. As of August 2026 there was no international release planned. If you want a unit this week, buy the X3 or the X4 Pro.
Does any new Xteink still charge over USB-C?
No. The original X4 with USB-C is discontinued. The X3, X4 Classic, and X4 Pro all charge over magnetic pogo pins. Do not treat the discontinued X4 as something you can order new.
